This is the perfect tool for a Student, Professional, or Hobbyist. I've used this in all 3 settings. I've had my original Westcott Protractor-Ruler since 1978...so long it has yellowed with age. This particular model (in any scale: 10th,20th,40th, etc) is the VERY BEST tool for drafting, engineering, or artwork; in the office or in the field. There is nothing else comparable to it on the market.(And it is much too hard to find in stores.) What makes this tool unique is the center-point of the protractor sits directly on the ruler's edge, making it possible to "throw" lines at precise angles, and to easily draw parallel lines at the same angle. It was an invaluable tool in the field (outside, in less than ideal conditions) as a geologist and as an engineer; whether drawing strike and dip of geologic features or triangulating locations for land surveying onto MAPS. It continues to be useful in my retirement, as I've taken up paining & drawing of architectural objects (old barns, bridges, grist mills, etc). This little ruler, with the protractor right on the ruler's edge, helps me render these buildings in proper perspective to the horizon. If others knew how useful they were, no other model would be sold. I've tried the other models, where the protractor is on a line just above the rule's straight edge; these are all but completely useless. (They are fine for measuring angles that are already drawn, but are the wrong tool for creating a drawing.) No wonder kids have trouble understanding visual geometric relationships... they are using the wrong tool!
